Getting your debit card

Members can receive a Golden Horseshoe Credit Union debit card at anytime during our branch hours at no charge. It only takes a few minutes and you will be able to use your card as soon as you leave the branch.

The credit union will be coming out with debit chip cards this summer. If you are currently an active user of our debit card, a new chip card will be sent to you in the mail. If you are not an active user, the new chip card will be available at our branch locations. Please note that once the new chip cards arrive, you will not be able to use your old debit card. For any questions or concerns regarding this matter, please contact Pam MacCormack at our Burlington Street location at 905-549-6506.

Protecting Your PIN

While INTERAC shared services are among the most secure in the world, debit card fraud can occur. Interac Association and its members continue to work together to protect cardholders from debit card fraud. You can help keep your money safe by protecting your debit card and Personal Identification Number (PIN) and by following these important steps:

1. Use your hand or body to shield your PIN when you are conducting transactions at an ATM.
2. Never let your debit card out of your sight when conducting a transaction at the point-of-sale. Only allow your card to be swiped once and always remember to take your debit card and transaction record with you once your transaction is completed.
3. Regularly check your Golden Horseshoe Credit Union statements and balances to verify all transactions have been properly documented. If entries do not accurately reflect transaction activities, for example, if there are missing or additional transactions, you should contact us immediately.
4. If your debit card is lost, stolen or retained by an ATM, notify the credit union immediately or phone the debit card cancellation hotline service (see below).
5. Your debit card and PIN are the keys to your account(s). Never disclose you’re PIN to anyone or you could be liable for losses. You are the only person who should know it.
6. Memorize your PIN - it's your electronic signature. If you suspect that someone knows your PIN, change it immediately or contact Golden Horseshoe Credit Union to cancel the card, and obtain a new card.
7. When selecting your PIN, never use obvious information. You could be liable for losses if you create your PIN by using your telephone number, date of birth, address or social insurance number.

Debit Card Cancellation Hotline Service

An automated service is available to you to cancel your debit card in the event it is lost, stolen or compromised. This service can be used outside of the credit union's operating hours.

Toll Free: 1-866-758-5678
Local Toronto: 905-461-2116

Before you place the call, please have your card number accessible. This number is the one on the front of your debit card. In the event of a missing card, you should record your card number and keep it in a safe place. However, never store your card number in the same location as your PIN (personal identification number). Also, have a pen and paper handy to record the reference number you will be given at the conclusion of the hotline phone call. It is also very important that you notify the credit union at your earliest convenience to arrange for a replacement card.
