History
In the spring of 1942 a small group of employees of Stelco Canada Works met to hear about the emergence of credit unions in the area and how they could benefit from this. A group of 20 steelworkers met weekly to learn about the fundamentals of the Credit Union movement. On September 24, 1942, the Stelco Finishing Works Credit Union was incorporated.
Shortly after that the Employees of Dofasco Credit Union was founded in 1954. It was a time when banks weren’t interested in modest deposits and loans for hard-working families. A group of Dofasco employees were looking for a banking alternative that would provide for the unique needs of steel workers and their families in a fair and equitable manner. The developing Credit Union movement of the time fit the need.
In 2005 discussions began about merging these two credit unions, a common history, goals and ideals sparked an idea of growth and stability for the two credit unions. October 1, 2007 saw the beginning of a new entity Golden Horseshoe Credit Union Limited. This new credit union incorporates the shared values and history of both of the credit unions that preceded it.
It began and remains a co-operative financial institution
with its members’ best interests at heart.
